Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the 21e once again set up camp within the grounds of the Chiltern Open Air Museum. Nestled amongst the rolling countryside of the Chiltern Hills, the museum provides a unique backdrop for Napoleonic re-enactment, with its collection of carefully restored historic buildings offering visitors a glimpse into rural life from centuries past.

For me, this was a first visit to the event, though the museum's annual "Cavalry and Cannons: The Napoleonic Experience" has become a firm fixture on the calendar over recent years. Organised in cooperation with the Napoleonic Association, the weekend brought together groups from across the country for two days of living history displays, military demonstrations, cavalry drills, firing competitions, and, of course, the large afternoon battle that serves as the centrepiece of the event.

What makes Chiltern particularly special is the setting itself. Rather than an open field, the action unfolds amongst cottages, farm buildings, and village streets, creating an immersive atmosphere for both reenactors and visitors alike. Throughout the weekend, members of the public were able to wander through the camps, speak with soldiers and civilians, and learn more about the realities of life during the Napoleonic era.

The weather certainly played its part in making the weekend memorable. Much of the country experienced an unseasonably warm spell, but few of us realised just how exceptional it was at the time. Temperatures climbed steadily throughout the weekend, reaching a sweltering 34.5°C on both the Sunday and Monday. It was only upon returning home that many of us discovered we had been camped in the very area where new UK May temperature records had been set.

Needless to say, life in wool uniforms became something of an endurance test. Shade was at a premium, water bottles were constantly being refilled, and any opportunity to cool down was quickly taken. Despite the heat, spirits remained high throughout the camp, with members making the most of the long summer evenings after visitors had departed.

Even after sunset, temperatures remained remarkably warm. Some members opted to bivouac inside the museum's large barn, seeking a little respite from the heat while enjoying a unique night's accommodation amongst the historic surroundings. Some members from our French Brigade even war-gamed in the warm spring evening!

As always, the event provided a fantastic opportunity to meet old friends, welcome visitors into camp, and showcase Napoleonic history to the public. We would like to extend our thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Chiltern Open Air Museum, as well as the organisers, participants, and visitors who helped make the weekend such a success. We look forward to returning again in the future.
